We asked our friends at the Mason-Dixon Experiment how they keep their family bug free all summer, whether they’re gardening, hunting, or just playing in the backyard. Check out their advice below! – Professor Bugsbee
Southern Devils
Mosquitoes, gnats, chiggers, and ticks. If you live in the south these little devil bugs, which I truly believe generated from the river Styx, will annoy the fire out of you from March-November. How do you combat them? Set them on fire? That would require catching them all first. Move to Alaska or somewhere with sub-freezing temps 90% of the time? Good option, but that can prove costly and most southerners like myself detest cold weather.
So what do you do? The answer is simple: Use Ben’s® Tick & Insect Repellent.
Tested for 4 years
The Mason-Dixon Experiment (aka Team MDE) has been using Ben’s® bug spray and their other repellent products for about 4 years now. When we use it and use it properly, it works like a charm. When we don’t, we pay dearly for it.
In the past 4 years, we have had a few cases of chiggers, one case of Lyme’s Disease, a few ticks stuck to us, and several mosquito bites. What was the common theme with all these events? We didn’t use Ben’s®.
Bug Spray for Hunting, Fishing, & Everything Else
We are all hunters and fishermen here at Team MDE. During the spring turkey season, we spray our clothing and gear down with the permethrin spray about every couple weeks to ensure we stay tick and chigger free.
For extra protection before we head into the woods, we spray down any exposed skin with the Ben’s 30% DEET, which comes in an Eco-Spray bottle that can be sprayed any which way you like. The best part is that it’s non-aerosol, meaning it’s not harmful for the environment.
We also use Ben’s 30% when hiking, camping, fishing, working in the garden, and playing outside late in the evening.
Applying Ben’s Bug Spray
There are a few tips that we can give you to ensure that you are using the Ben’s 30% to the best of its ability.
- Always spray at the same distance from your body to make sure you get a consistent coverage. We recommend 6-10 inches away for a nice even coating
- Keep out of your eyes and mouth (duh)
- Make sure you get all exposed skin areas covered
- Take extra with you and periodically spray down for added protection
The 30% DEET also comes in a wipe, which is great for the little ones or to keep with you on the boat, because the spray will make an aluminum Jon Boat’s floor slick. The wipes also come in handy when hiking, as they are less bulky than the spray bottles.
